Deborah Mayerchin, Ph.D.Mayerchin, Deborah - Obituary Obituary for Deborah (Mayerchin) Cassidy in the 29 July 2016 edition of the Greensboro (NC, USA) News & Record Newspaper. GREENSBORO - Deb Cassidy passed away on July 20, 2016 at her home surrounded by the love of her family and friends. She courageously battled a sudden onset and rapid cancer. Deb is loved by her family and beloved to many in her community, state and across the nation. Deb was a powerful advocate for young children, a dedicated professor in early childhood education, a generous mentor, a leader for quality early childhood education and equity for teachers, and a loyal colleague. In all her roles, she maintained a zest for life, a sense of humor and time and energy for her family. Deb Cassidy was a professor at UNC-Greensboro for 26 years, including a 4 year leave to serve as Director of Division of Child Development and Early Education for the state of North Carolina. Deb also spent the last year as President Elect for the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Deb is preceded in death by her daughter Carrie Lynn Cassidy, her sister Marlene Adams, and her parents Steve and Margaret Mayerchin. She is survived by her partner and wife, Rosemarie Vardell, her daughter Jennie Bever, her son-in-law Shannon Bever and her grandsons Connor Bever and Elliot Seals. The loss of the light that was Deb leaves the world feeling a bit darker at this moment, but the beauty and power of her legacy will light the way for her family as well as the children and teachers she fought for every day. A celebration of Deb's life is planned for September.
